The Boone County Historical Society was organized in April 1977. In 1988, the historic Cragun House was donated to the Society, and now serves as our headquarters.
Boone County, Indiana is located in central Indiana, just a few miles northwest of our state capital, Indianapolis. With a delightful mix of rural farms, small towns, picturesque shopping districts, and rapid access to a large metropolitan area, our county has long been a favored spot for residential development, farming, and commerical expansion.
The modern recorded history of Boone County begins in the 17th century, with a concentration of Native American tribes, which gradually gave way to white settlement. From that point forward, the county has developed into today's vibrant combination of urban and rural influence. We honor our rich heritage, and invite you to join us in learning more about Boone County...past and present.
The Mission of the Society is to identify, preserve, restore, and promote the historical heritage of Boone County, Indiana to the benefit of current and future generations.
Can we help you find historical sites around the county, perhaps a family grave, or a long forgotten home place, or perhaps a newspaper article from 1939? Would you like to visit our Victorian lady, the Cragun House? Perhaps a cemetery tour, or some genealogical research? How about becoming a volunteer to help out with some of our events?
And naturally, if you would like to become a member and receive our quarterly newsletter, or offer a contribution to fund our efforts, we're happy to accept your kindness.
